Description

Bobby Knight — The Singing Ferry | Sessions on the Green® “The Singing Ferry” grows from Peter Pickering’s childhood memories of Kenya around 1963, when, aged twelve, he experienced the Kilifi ferry on the coastal road between Mombasa and Malindi. Before a bridge replaced the crossing in 1991, the ferry carried travellers across Kilifi Creek. In his memory, it was an open vessel, without the cabin structure seen in later photographs. What stayed with him was the sound. Men hauled on chains to pull the ferry across the water, singing together and stamping their feet on the deck to keep the rhythm. Physical effort became a shared musical pulse: voices, movement and resonant footfalls inseparable from the journey. It is this remembered crossing that gives the song its name—the singing ferry. Bobby Knight’s deep, gravelly bass-baritone carries that memory into a story of passing years, distant places and voices that never quite disappear. A large male choir answers him in overlapping chants and rich harmonies, while steel footstamps, rolling bass and interlocking African percussion echo the movement and collective energy of the crossing. Warm acoustic guitar, piano, Hammond and strings deepen the atmosphere. An intimate breakdown gives way to an exhilarating choral return. The plea to “bring me home again” reaches beyond a place: it longs for a moment, for the people within it, and for a sound that an ordinary childhood journey made unforgettable. The accompanying video draws its imagery from the places behind the memory. Most of the full-frame colour scenes show present-day Mombasa and Tsavo National Park—the destination of the journey on the day Peter remembers crossing Kilifi Creek. The small square photographs arranged on a tabletop are based on pictures he took during that trip with a Yashica 635 camera; their square format reflects those original photographs. Some have been reimagined for this video because the originals remain in Australia while Peter is in Thailand. Those images will be replaced with the originals when they become available. Throughout, the imagery remains rooted in Mombasa, Malindi, the surrounding coastal region and the onward journey to Tsavo.
